How people learn: the four learning modes
Many people look for a learning style quiz expecting a label. The more useful question is how you move between four distinct learning modes — and which of them you reach for first when something new lands on your desk.
The four learning modes
The Learning Mode Profile is built on four modes of learning. Everyone uses all four; what differs is the order and the ease with which we use them.
- Experience. Learning by doing — trying things out, getting involved, and letting the experience itself teach you.
- Review. Learning by reflecting — stepping back, observing, and considering what an experience means before acting.
- Conclude. Learning by thinking — building concepts, models and theories that explain what you have seen.
- Apply. Learning by testing — putting ideas into practice and checking whether they work in the real world.
From modes to a profile
The four modes sit on two axes: grasping new material (through experience or through reflection) and transforming it into something useful (through conclusion or through application). Where your preferences land on these two axes forms your learning profile — a position on a map, not a box.
Shaded corners are outside the possible range.
The alternating box shading is for legibility only and carries no meaning.
A profile is a preference, not a score. There is no better or worse place on the map, and most people can strengthen the modes they use less often once they can see the pattern.
Why organisations use it
Teams learn faster when they understand the mix of preferences in the room. Facilitators use the Learning Mode Profile to design programmes that engage every mode, and to help groups see why the same session lands differently for different people.
Take the profile
The Learning Mode Profile is run in batches by a facilitator or administrator. If you have been invited, enter your batch code to begin — it takes about ten minutes. If you are exploring it for your organisation, get in touch with Planet Ganges Consulting.
